Another glorious example of co-creation, which is close to the heart of one of our stewards, Lori Warmington, is the global initiative called The Dalai Lama Fellows. This fellowship is deeply committed to seeding education of the heart through Compassionate Action. Their mission statement states:
Dalai Lama Fellows, a unique global program personally authorized by His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, envisions and works towards a world that tends to the good of the whole as well as of the individual. We do this by guiding a global network of young social entrepreneurs to deepen their effectiveness by integrating secular ethics, contemplative values, and compassion.
In 2002, Lori held a retreat at her Aspen home which was the beginning of a process of group work known as The Aspen Grove. This was the weekend before Congress voted on the war with Iraq. It was a very anxious and tense time in our country. There was no direction preset for the group except clarity between the inner contemplative practice and action in the world and monitoring what was unfolding through the group at the retreat. Father Thomas Keating attended and reminded the group that, “The work is in Consciousness, but what are we going to do about the upheavals in the world?” He shared his life’s story of how Silence and Grace directed his life and left the group that weekend by saying, “Spirit was present here!” This evolving group process rooted symbolically in the single tap root system of the Aspen Grove and the Oneness of Humanity brought forth many inspired seeds and then gradually directed actions in the world
Through synchronicity and many dedicated people following their hearts’ directional path, a proposal was written for a visit by His Holiness, The Fourteenth Dalai Lama to the University of California, Irvine based on educating and activating youth through leadership toward peace, secular values, and compassionate action. His Holiness, The Dalai Lama, accepted this invitation and came to campus. The honorarium for this visit was an endowed Scholarship in his name: to learn more click here. The success of the Dalai Lama Scholars activated the next step in keeping with His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s high interest in youth and the strong need for global leadership based in a Program of education for the heart and demonstrated compassionate action. The Dalai Lama Global Fellows Program was born. There are now Fellows in the USA, Canada, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia.
Working in collective/contemplative groups with pure intention does open the door to the wisdom of the heart, which in turn manifests in inspired “seeds” to heal the needs of the world. The seeds of that original meeting in Aspen continue to be felt globally, as do all gatherings around this planet where people are united in collective work empty of the personal self and waiting for the heart’s wisdom to guide, direct, and ultimately manifest new answers and direction for the survival of the human family, our beautiful Earth , and the living systems that support and benefit us all.
